The volunteers, and sometimes guerrilla gardeners, of the Fraserlands Community Gardening Group are hosting a picnic to celebrate this year’s accomplishments.
Having seen their work, I can attest to the fact these volunteers have made enormous strides in clearing, maintaining and beautifying the Kent Avenue pathway, which runs along the railway tracks near Jellicoe Street south of Marine Drive. To thank everyone who pitched in the group is hosting the community get together Oct. 6 at the Riverfront picnic site from 2 to 4 p.m. with refreshments and door prizes. The group wants to also thank the City of Vancouver’s Neighbourhood Matching Fund, the Vancouver Foundation’s Neighbourhood Small Grants Project, the park board and South Vancouver Family Place. The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir is launching its fall concert series by teaming up with guest organist Michael Murray. Spiritual Pipes combines the majestic pipe organ with the powerful male voices of the choir, and piano, with music chosen specially for this unique performance.

This Thursday, Sept. 26, staff and volunteers from B.C. SPCA shelters across the province, including the Vancouver branch, are hosting candle-lighting events to coincide with a global movement to raise awareness about shelter and rescue animals still looking for a home.
Members of the public are invited to attend the Vancouver SPCA shelter boardroom, 1205 East Seventh Ave., at 12:30 p.m. Thursday for the Remember Me Thursday candle-lighting event. Candles will be lit at the exact same time at similar shelters around the world. Participants are asked to bring a tea candle and photo of a pet that has touched their heart. Donations will also be accepted with proceeds going to the care of shelter animals. Online donations are also welcome at spca.bc.ca. Participants are encouraged to help spread the word to other animal lovers by sharing Remember Me thoughts at facebook.com/bcspca and posting a photo to the site of an adopted animal that has touched their life.
