Construction of three new lanes at Aldergrove border crossing begins

Project to be completed by fall of 2019

In the summer months, 6,000 vehicles a day are on the stretch of Hwy 13 leading to the Aldergrove border crossing.

Over the next year there will be short-term pain for long-term gain at the Aldergrove border crossing.

A section of Highway 13 is being widened from two to five lanes: new southbound Nexus and commercial vehicle lanes and a northbound truck climbing lane.

The project includes a new east-west connection and signal at 3B Avenue, a safety upgrade at the intersection of Highway 13 and 8th Avenue, and pedestrian and cycling facilities at 0 Avenue.

The improvements are to make the flow of visitors and goods move more quickly in an area that sees 6,000 vehicles each day in the summer peak season.

It’s expected that the separate Nexus and truck lanes will remove about 30 per cent of traffic from the general purpose border-crossing lane and reduce lineups on the highway.

To reduce frustration, travel advisories will be posted on changeable message signs and at Drive BC.

Travellers are asked to obey the posted speed limit and watch for workers and traffic control personnel.

The $15.38-million contract was awarded to Tybo Contracting of Langley. The federal government is paying $10 million with the province picking up the rest.
