Crews are mopping up after a diesel spill in False Creek.
Hundreds of metres of containment booms were set up overnight off Granville Island after the spill was first reported at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night. The City of Vancouver was reportedly informed at around 2:30 a.m. this morning.
The city wrote via its Twitter account the spill is estimated at 1,000 litres, but park board “biologists have noted the spill is unlikely to affect English Bay beaches and Habitat Island.”
The source of the spill has not yet been identified, but Vancouver Fire and Rescue Department workers have determined the fuel did not come from a source on land, leading to speculation it likely came from a boat docked in the area around Granville Island.
Transport Canada is expected to conduct an investigation to determine the exact source of the spill.
