Delta fire fighters rescued a family dog from a house fire in North Delta today.

“Delta Fire crews attended to a house fire today. Their efficient response, quick containment, and search efforts saved the life of the family dog. The dog suffered smoke inhalation and has been taken to the hospital. Please remember, pet masks & smoke alarms save lives!” the city explained on its Twitter page.

The fire department was called to the fire which damaged the home in the 10900 block of Lyon Road just after 10 a.m. The pet appeared to suffer smoke inhalation and was treated by paramedics.

According to the Delta fire department, when crews first arrived they were met by one of the home's occupants who got out of the house after being alerted by a smoke detector. That person indicated they were alone at the time but there were multiple vehicles in the driveway of the house, which has multiple suites, so a search was conducted inside. That's when the dog, which was lethargic, was found in a kennel in one of the suites. Nobody else was inside. The occupant who got out was taken to hospital to be checked out but did not suffer any serious injuries.
