Commuters will be pleased to hear that part of East First Avenue will fully reopen this weekend.

Traffic was reduced to a single lane between Rupert and Nanaimo over the summer but that section of the road will fully reopen on Sunday morning.

The section of the street from Clark to Nanaimo, which has been fully closed since July 3, will reopen on Friday, August 31.

The road has been closed since the end of May to allow workers with Fortis B.C. to replace a gas line.

Trevor Whales with Fortis B.C. says work along East 1 between Rupert and Boundary should wrap up by early October.

Whales says they recognize that the work has inconvenienced residents, businesses and commuters. “We certainly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we’ve been carrying out this work.”

He says the company has worked with businesses in the area to ensure normal access to parking and deliveries can continue.
