At the London Summer Games Martha McCabe finished fifth in the 200-metre breaststroke, touching the wall after four lengths of the pool just 3.15 seconds behind the American winner, Rebecca Soni, who set a new world record as she swam to Olympic gold.

Her time of 2:23.16 improved on her breakout swim at the 2011 world championships where she won bronze in 2:24.81 but McCabe had not set goal to finish fifth.

Its just another learning experience, she told reporters poolside at Londons Olympic Park Aquatics Centre after the final on Aug. 2.

Theres a lot to learn from it. Im upset now just because I was dreaming about the medal and its all about the race. I put my heart into this, so it means a lot.

She then took a breath and cleared her throat but could not hold back the tears, according to a story by Sean Fitz-Gerald, a National Post sportswriter who witnessed and reported McCabes emotions.

This was the first Olympic final for the 22-year-old swimmer who lives in Vancouver and trains with the national team breaststroke specialist Jozef Nagy at the University of B.C.
