First-ever Scream Choir goes public with video

Playland hopes the choir will inspire visitors to put their own lungs to the test while on rides at the amusement park

Playland's Scream Choir has completed rehearsals and now star in a "making-of" video.

While watching scenes from a video released today about the making of a one-of-a-kind choir, it’s obvious the effort took its toll on composer Bob Smart.

The exhaustion is clearly etched on Smart’s face and in one scene he can be seen storming from the practise room when the frustration becomes overwhelming in a move reminiscent of the volatile music producer Simon Cowell. But, as the video continues, Smart’s determination becomes clear and he eventually manages to pull the choir together for a startling rendition of the “Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Strauss II.

The fact the song is performed by the newly-formed Scream Choir gives the song a twist that would likely send Strauss rolling over in his grave. In June, Playland put out a call asking scream queens and kings to audition for the choir by submitting videos of them screaming to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” The end result is a choir made up of all ages and levels of talent screaming their way through performances in public, including in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, standing on the Playland-PNE grounds and while riding the Hell’s Gate ride. The choir practised for two weeks before their public performances.

Playland hopes the video will inspire people to visit the park to test out their own screaming abilities.
