Canucks honoured: While one Canucks team was locked out, another Canucks team, the 1945-1946 edition, was feted at the 44th Banquet of Champions Gala. The team, which also battled a Boston squad in a seven-game championship series (and won), along with nine individuals, was inducted into the B.C.'s Sports Hall of Fame. The Pacific Coast Hockey League champs joined fellow inductees David Ensworthy, Barbara Howard, May Brown, Don Martin, Michael Edgson, Howard Kelsey, Bernard Moberg, Andrea Neil and Ski Cross Olympic gold medalist Ashleigh McIvor. The gala grossed $360,000 for the organization's Hero In You education program.
Swimming success: While no one actually jumped in, nearly 140 guests did dine atop Lorne and Melita Segal's Southlands' swimming pool. The power couple once again hosted Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation's third annual Life Commitment Dinner. John Evans and Saeedeh Salem chaired the $1,000-a-plate Hawksworth-catered hootenanny. Actor Tom Hanks and comedian Rick Mercer delivered heartfelt messages inspiring diners to leave a sizeable tip of nearly $300,000 for the 24-hour HIV/AIDS care facility.
Toasting B.C. wines: The largest annual celebration of B.C. wines and local food, ChefmeeatsGrape showcased 74 wineries and 10 Ocean Wise restaurants to a crowd of nearly 450 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
