Two of Highway 1’s slipperiest off-ramps on the North Shore are about to get a lot more clingy.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced Wednesday that it would be applying a special high-friction surface treatment to the Capilano Road westbound exit and the Lonsdale Avenue exits, both eastbound and westbound.

The extra grit is part of a $3.9-million project to reduce rear-enders at the 14 worst intersections and highway interchanges in the Lower Mainland. The Cap Road interchange and surrounding area saw drivers involved in 191 collisions resulting in insurance claims in 2016, according to ICBC. The Lonsdale interchange, 179.

Crews are installing the resin and aggregate surfacing throughout the month of September. Work will be done overnight to minimize traffic impacts. If the trial works well, it may be spread to other high-crash road surfaces around the province.

The ministry estimates the treatment will last for more than seven years.
