Indian Summer brings Indian subcontinent to Vancouver

India is many things: expansive, crowded, culturally rich, historic, innovative, and (to the outside eye, at least) somewhat complicated.

India is many things: expansive, crowded, culturally rich, historic, innovative, and (to the outside eye, at least) somewhat complicated. The Indian Summer Festival joyfully explores the many facets of this ancient country through dance and music performances, film screenings, hands-on workshops, food tastings, and illuminating dialogue.

Highlights of this 10-day celebration (July 4-13) include a drool-inducing tasting event curated by culinary guru Vikram Vij; a lively performance by musical group Rajasthan Josh, in which pulsating percussive beats dance with soul-stirring strings; workshops in hip-hop yoga, Bollywood dance and bhangra; a talk by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta (Fire, Earth, Water and Heaven on Earth); an outdoor screening of Little Zizou (from the screenwriter of Mississippi Masala and Salaam Bombay!); discussions on global politics and urban happiness; a cabaret of story-telling, poetry, music and stunning visuals; and much more.

The bulk of this Indian feast for the senses will take place at SFUs Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, with other events unfolding at venues around the city. Full schedule and venue details can be found at IndianSummerFestival.ca.
