Jas Johal has been in the midst of revolutions, so he knows what they look like. But his experiences as a senior reporter for Global Television have also taught him that revolutions dont always need to include violent street protests or baton-wielding police officers.
Sometimes revolutions happen without us noticing.
Western nations are so accustomed to being world leaders that they dont realize that a revolution is upon us, he says.
Its a changing world, he continues. In many ways, North America and Europe have created the rules about how the world is run, but thats being turned upside down.
The rise of South Asia and China is about to create a new global dynamic, one for which we as Canadians and Vancouverites have to be prepared.
It is the new reality and we have to deal with it, says Johal, who is back in Vancouver after spending three years as the networks Asia bureau chief. There will be economic disruptions but were in the process of connecting to seven billion consumers.
Thats the theme of his seven-minute presentation at former mayor Sam Sullivans upcoming Public Salon. On May 16 at Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St.), Johal will be joined by:
Chip Wilson, founder of Lululemon
Charles Barber, City Opera
Carolyn Chan and Clancy Dennehy, Metal Dog
Dr. Hal Gunn, Inspire Health
Dr. Unjali Malhotra, speaking on womens health
Jim Bolger, environmental ocean researcher
Aaron Sanderson, Next Leaders Network
The evening is part of Sullivans Global Civic Policy Society which wants to inspire, provoke and entertain Vancouverites as we explore the world around us and our role in it.
Tickets are $16 if you buy them online at TicketsTonight.ca or 604-684-2787and $20 at the door. For $90 you can become part of the Premiere Circle and mix and mingle over a pre-salon dinner. (GlobalCivic.org)
