The high school basketball season launched last week with the 14th annual Telus Classic invitational, and the No. 1 Kitsilano Blue Demons proved their pre-season hype.
The Demons beat Kelowna secondary 80-70 to win the tournament and placed two stars, big man Luka Zaharijevic and sleek-handed Justin Sze, in the All-star team. Vancouver College's Gogy Kamanan and Churchill's Mindy Minhas joined the Kits pair.
No senior girls team from Vancouver cracked the final four and no players made the All-star team.
Zaharijevic was also offered a full-ride scholarship to his choice of UBC, University of Victoria, Thompson Rivers or Trinity Western.
HSBC, the former title sponsor of the Classic, also awarded scholarships to Amante Alyssa of Van Tech, Shayna Slobin of York House and Jilliane Vina of Britannia as well as Kamanan, Han Chen Wang of Churchill, Andrew Cassie of Kitsilano, Sol Diana and Yashu Sharma, both of Tupper.
Britannia's Angie Banh was recognized with the Mayor Larry Campbell City of Vancouver Unsung Hero Award, and the Churchill Bulldogs were honoured as the most sportsmanlike team.
