The Langara mens basketball team picked up two more wins on the weekend to clinch first place in the B.C. college league and a bye in the opening round of playoffs, which run Feb. 28 to March 2 at Camosun College.
Langara sits atop the standings with a near-perfect 18-1 record. The lead No. 2 Vancouver Island University (14-5) by eight points and the No. 4 Douglas Royals (8-11) by 20 points.
Langara beat the Kwantlen University Eagles Friday, Feb. 8 by 25 points after pulling away in an otherwise close game. Brody Greig put up tremendous numbers and, as Langaras Athletic Department put it, a near quadruple-double with 13 assists, nine steals, eight rebounds, and seven points.
Brody did a little bit of everything today, said head coach Paul Eberhardt. He was very good at initiating the break with his defensive rebounding and steals.
Jeff Chu led the Falcons in scoring with 22 points, including four three-pointers, and Jesse Jeffers had 18 points and seven rebounds.
On Saturday the Falcons travelled to Abbotsford to play the only team to have beaten them this year, the Columbia Bible College Bearcats.
The Falcons took an early 15 point lead before the Bearcats fought back and close the gap. Langara led by six at the half.
Langara out scored the Bearcats 27 to 17 in the third quarter and handed the one team to sully their perfect record a 101-87 loss.
The Falcons had five players in double-digits with Greig and Mason scoring 17 points each.
The boys were determined to make up for our loss to CBC and I was happy with how we wore them down as they are a hard working team that never quits, said Eberhardt.
The Falcons host a double-header this weekend, starting with the Capilano Blues 8 p.m. Feb. 15 and the Quest Kermodes at 8 p.m. February 16.
