An unprecedented crowd gathered outside the park board office May 15 to loudly and prominently protest a proposed ban of cetaceans in Vancouver parks.

In the ceaseless rain, roughly 250 circled the one-story building and pushed onto the lawns and gardens where they were visible from the board room table. Inside, seven commissioners opened their semi-monthly meeting with the regular if not mundane update of chairman Michael Wiebe’s most recent public appearances.
The chants were as persistent as the rain. Echoing around the large crowd, the slogans not always intelligible through the glass, the messages ranged from “Do the right thing,” “Every animal matters,” and, “Whales need help” as many protesters held signs that melted in the downpour.
