They’re still trying help those two grey whales, an adult and its calf, that were beached in shallow waters off Boundary Bay.
At last word, they were still alive and moving around, and the tide is gradually coming back in.
Residents late this afternoon reported the incident as the tide was way out, giving people near the U.S.-Canada border on the tidal flats an opportunity to get close to the mammals in the shallow water.
The mammal response team with Fisheries and Oceans Canada is on the scene for the recovery effort, while a vet with the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre was also going to assist.
The DFO told the Optimist a team is using refloatation equipment and a vessel in an attempt to move the whales that are about 30 metres off shore. Care must be taken to ensure safety of the whales and personnel.
For the whales’ safety, onlookers are urged to keep at least 100 metres away as more people have gathered and media helicopters were flying overhead.
