Keep an eye out this month for colourful farmers market fridge magnets adorning lamp posts, doorways and newspaper boxes in the downtown core — finding one will net you $5 to spend at Vancouver Farmers Market’s Thursday Downtown Market.
The magnet, designed by local illustrator Holly Cruise, can be traded in for a wooden token worth $5 in market product — anything from a pint of local strawberries to a loaf of artisan bread or a snack from a food truck — during the entire month of June.
“We got the idea from a farmers market in the Okanagan,” Vancouver Farmers Market communications manager Jen Candela said in a press release. “They covered their whole town with magnets, including people’s cars. We’re just hitting a few key areas downtown as a fun way of encouraging people to check out our Thursday market.”
The Downtown Farmers Market opens its third season today at Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza. It runs every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. and features 30 local farms and producers, as well as offerings from various food trucks. The market also includes a concert series and patio bar hosted by Vancouver Civic Theatres on select dates in June, July and August.
The magnet contest runs until June 30. For more information visit eatlocal.org/downtown.
