The BC Coroners Service says the man hit by a transit bus in Burnaby last week has been declared neurologically deceased, meaning when he dies it will be four people killed on Burnaby roads in June.

A spokesman for the coroner says the unnamed man remains on life support at Vancouver General Hospital.

Burnaby RCMP said the 33-year-old man was critically injured shortly after an altercation with a 62-year-old male on June 11.

The altercation happened on the sidewalk along a busy Hastings Street – at Carleton Avenue - and police say somehow the man entered the street and was critically injured when he was hit by the passing transit bus.

“During this altercation one of the males entered the roadway and was struck by a transit bus,” stated an RCMP press release. “How the male entered the roadway is still under investigation with a focus on whether it was as a result of the altercation.”

The 62-year-old man was taken into custody but was released without charges.

An investigation is continuing and police said last week that they were still trying to determine if the two men knew each other.

A 75-year-old pedestrian was killed earlier this month in an apparent hit-and-run tragedy. The driver has since been found. Another person was killed the next day in a situation that police say may have included up to eight vehicles at Kingsway and Nelson. A third person was killed, this time at Lougheed Highway near Madison in a crash that involved multiple vehicles, including at least one speeding.
