North Vancouver RCMP are investigating after a Deep Cove teen said he was assaulted on a trail.
The incident happened at around 1 a.m. on May 25 as the 18-year-old was making his way home from a family gathering. As he walked down a dark trail linking Lima Street to Deep Cove Road, the boy heard someone call out “Hey,” police said.
“And as he turned around, he was assaulted. He was punched numerous times, he believed, by two assailants,” said Sgt. Peter DeVries, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.
The victim fought back “to the point where afterwards, he had swollen knuckles,” DeVries said, and was able to run away. The attackers didn’t attempt to steal anything.
The teen’s family called police around 3 a.m. but by that time, it was too late to track the suspects.
“We did some extensive foot patrols through the area to try to identify if there was somebody out there but we didn’t find anybody,” DeVries said.
Now police and the victim are left wondering who is responsible – and why he was targeted.
“He has no idea who it would have been. He can’t think of anyone who would have wanted to do that to him and we have no other leads. We don’t have anything to follow,” DeVries said.
Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact police.
