Notre Dame Jugglers 32 6 New Westminster Hyacks
The Jugglers (1-2) six-game winless streak, including exhibition games, came to an end Friday in a 32-6 win over New West Hyacks at Burnaby Lakes.
Friday night it finally all came together, said head coach Richard Scott. After two weeks of bitter disappointment, our defence came out on fire and our offence took advantage of turnovers.
Paulo Dube opened the scoring for Notre Damn and Aldrich Berrios caught a pass from Danny Spagnuolo to give the Jugglers a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Spagnuolo and running back Mike Aranzaso, the teams leading rusher, both scored to widen Notre Dames lead.
Its no secret that the team that wins the turnover battle, usually wins games, said Scott. Our offensive line was dominant in the first half, and our defence made big plays and played with real team speed.
The Hyacks are 0-3 and sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Moving to 1-2 on the regular season, the Jugglers are third behind Mount Doug (2-1) and Van College (2-1)
New West has good players, especially at the back positions, but we were able to overwhelm them in the backfield for some very key stops, especially on fourth down. The team was very excited and relieved about winning, and now we have to get back to business to beat Lord Tweedsmuir, who are a very well coached team.
Notre Dame meets Lord Tweedsmuir Friday 5 p.m. at Burnaby Lakes.
Vancouver College Fighting Irish 49 14 West Van
The Irish (2-1) move into a first-place tie with Victorias Mount Doug Rams (2-1) after a 49-14 win over West Van Oct. 13 at home.
Liam Mahara ran for three touchdowns, including one rush for 76 yards.
Hunter Robinson passed three touchdowns, one to Manvir Khun-Khun for four yards, Andrew Pauls for 54 yards and Juancho Ramirez for 38 yards. Robinson also ran for a score of seven yards.
On defence, Anthony Balce earned the praises of head coach Todd Bernett. [He] was a force on the defensive line, picking up two sacks and putting pressure on the QB, which was a key to beating West Van.
Adrian Yu also played a big game in the secondary and deflected several passes, said Bernett.
The Fighting Irish travel to West Van Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start against the Hyacks.
Eric Hamber Griffins 0 36 Argyle Pipers
The hard-luck Griffins (0-2) were the unlucky visitors at an unforgettable Argyle homecoming 32 years in the making.
Playing their first home game since the varsity football team folded after the 1980-81 season, the Pipers are so far winless this season and before Saturdays game, were outscored 145-0 in a 0-4 start.
The Pipers registered their first win over the Griffins.
It was a good day for them, not so much for us, Griffins head coach Bobby Gibson. We had trouble getting any traction early and the Pipers had huge momentum from their crowd.
The Griffins are also fighting injury. Six players are out of the lineup, including starters at vital positions like quarterback, centre, wide-receiver and an offensive and defensive guard.
Even with the injuries, the team went out and gave it their best shot, said Gibson. Our offence never really did get going and defensively we had trouble stringing together enough consistent play to get the ball back. It was a disappointing loss.
The Griffins host AA Southern Conference competitors Holy Cross (2-1) Friday at 3 p.m.
