A second-place finish at the Canadian Track and Field Championships was enough to secure Vancouver race walker Inaki Gomez his place at the London Summer Games.
The Vancouver College and University of B.C. alum finished the 10-kilometre race a mere 47 seconds behind Richmond competitor Evan Dunfee. The pair trained together as T-birds and share a healthy rivalry as friends.
Dunfee won gold in the national event in 40 minutes, 15.5 seconds. Gomez took silver out of a field of nine racers, crossing the line in 41:02.3.
Gomez needed a top-three finish to secure his berth in London. He already met the Olympic A standard on March 30 at the international race walk challenge in China. He hit a personal best and covered 20 km in 1:21.5.
Gomez joins 40 track and field teammates who will represent Canada at the Summer Games.
Vancouvers Liz Gleadle, the national record holder in womens javelin, will compete at the Olympics along with marathon runner Dylan Wykes, who calls Vancouver home after moving to Kitsilano from Ontario.
