Champagne wishes

Its only about 45 minutes into the New Year and I really hate to do this (although I probably could have called with two hours left in the previous year), but one Davie Street bar sold tickets to a party for New Years Eve ($15!) and advertised Champagne on the ticket and the posters. Well, Henkell Trocken is not champagne! Even Baby Canadian Champagne is not Champagne its sparkling wine, crap! Whatever. And you charge an extra $9 more than youd normally charge for the most over-hyped night of the year and no champagne. Unimpressed. Anyway, hopefully the new year gets better.

Shame on slumlords

This a rant for all slum landlords in Vancouver! More often than not you select a rent amount that exceeds the actual worth of the place you are renting. Then, God forbid that tenant falls on hard times through no fault of her own. I know a very hard-working single mom who injured her back at work and went on EI. Since then she has had difficulty in securing full time work as jobs are scarce. Despite this, she has managed to pay all her rent even though it has been late. This landlord is now evicting her. She has no family in town to help her and she is at her wits end. Well, you heartless landlord, remember that hard times can happen to anyone and caring for people and showing compassion is more important then your callous pursuit of the Almighty Dollar. Put some heart into your business and remember that you cant take that money with you when your life is over. Your deeds, good or bad, will follow you. So I ask you, which deeds will you take with you? Poverty is NOT a crime and you should be fiercely ashamed of your treatment of this very sweet and honest loving mother whois experiencing extreme stress due to your selfish and cruel treatment of her.

Turn on the light

Whats with the black clothes? Black jacket, black pants, black shirt, black shoes, black scarf, black hat, so cool, so so so so so so (yawn) cool. Not only is it boring, but you make the city more dangerous, with your walking (or cycling!) at night in all black with earbuds blasting neo-disco and your face stuffed into your device. Youd probably agree that driving a car at night without lights is dumb; imagine how us smart people feel about you playing invisible pedestrian. Not to mention the boring. This year maybe you can discover the spectrum and grow some grownup fashion sense.

Tolls for everyone

If Translink is tolling the Golden Ears Bridge (at an exorbitant rate must I say the word gouging comes to mind), and if they are planning to toll the Port Mann Bridge, why dont they toll the Lions Gate Bridge and the Second Narrows too, and while they are it, why dont they stick a toll gate on the road to Whistler? That would be an equitable and fair solution to their supposed funding shortfall. If not, they should do some pruning at their topmost level. CEOs of companies seem to be making unbelievably humongous salaries.

Douche-y dumper

This is a message to the douchebag (or douchebags) who insisted on leaving a bag of garbage on the corner of Jervis and Nelson. This is home garbage, it should be disposed of through your household garbage system. But the worst part is that you left it right next to a garbage can! Could you at very least put it in the can, you lazy douchebag.

Not so smart after all

RE: End of the World predicted by ancient Mayans, cover Jan. 5. So if the Mayans were so smart, where are they? Huh?

Dress up, gentlemen

Walking by Hawksworth restaurant the other day, I was startled to see a rather large man wearing a toque and scarf seated in the booth at the window. Wonderful advertising for an upscale restaurant in the best city in the world! This was not an isolated incident at this restaurant nor at others I used to be a patron of. Note the past tense. Vancouverites, be advised that baseball caps are for the sports stadiums and toques for the slopes not the dining room.

Cutbacks = chaos

This complaint is about the extremely poor customer service at the EI call centre. Im not proud of the fact that Im looking for employment and that Im on EI. Im actively looking for work. But the call centre basically does not exist. Ive tried calling 15, 16 times in the last week and they are so busy and have had so many cutbacks you cant even be put on hold. Apparently this is due to the Harper government downsizing the EI call centre. Twice Ive had to go into the EI office in person and even the agents there said, Were on your side. The cutbacks are horrendous and its effecting everybody. So, Harper government: Do something here.
