A regional task force today will make its recommendation for a George Massey Tunnel replacement.
This summer the Mayors’ Task Force endorsed a shortlist of six options, each having benefits but challenges as well.
Those options include:
Six-lane bridge, plus two traffic lanes and multi-use path (MUP) in existing tunnel
Six-lane bored tunnel, plus two traffic lanes and MUP in existing tunnel
Six-lane immersed tube tunnel, plus two traffic lanes and MUP in existing tunnel
Eight-lane bridge with MUP
Eight-lane bored tunnel, plus MUP in existing tunnel
Eight-lane immersed tube tunnel, plus MUP in new or existing tunnel
Public consultations are scheduled to begin this fall and the province is to prepare a business case by the end of 2020.
A report notes the 60-year-old old Massey Tunnel could have another 50 years of life if rehabilitated and given regular maintenance.
Earlier this year, Premier John Horgan openly hinted a twin-tunnel proposal would get serious consideration from his government.
He also said his government views the consensus among the mayors as an opportunity to move quickly on a replacement.
