Rizzardo "extremely qualified" but forced to re-apply as UBC women's soccer coach

Hiring error means position open to applicants until Dec. 14

The UBC Thunderbirds introduced the new head coach for the womens soccer program last Thursday at noon, but one day later explained the position was announced prematurely and would be re-posted for another week.

Marc Rizzardo was named head coach on Dec. 6 but the physiotherapist and former UBC soccer player must wait to find out if the job is his.

The job will remain open to applicants until Dec. 14.

Two errors popped up in the hiring process, which raised a number of questions for people within the UBC community, said university spokesman Randy Schmidt.

The first oversight was Rizzardos status as an internal candidate. As a clinical associate professor in the faculty of medicine, he was initially recognized as an internal candidate however upon review we realized that that [position] didnt meet the criteria, said Schmidt.

Then followed the second oversight, which was the timing of the announcement. The job posting was required to stay open until Dec. 7 but Rizzardo's appointment was announced before then because the hiring of internal candidates is expedited, explained Schmidt.

He is a well-qualified candidate so we really regret the confusion and initially reached out to him to explain he situation and express our regret, said Schmidt. Weve been at pains to say he has been an outstanding candidate and remains an outstanding candidate.

Schmidt did not know how many people applied for the head coaching position but they will have the chance to re-apply.

Interviews for the job will continue through the week of Dec. 17.

Rizzardo will have the choice to interview again.

A hiring panel will now consist of five members, including three UBC varsity coaches.
