BC & Alberta Guide Dogs needs volunteers in South Delta and Richmond to provide short-term, loving homes for expectant canine moms and their newborn pups.

Whelpers provide a stable environment for the mother before and after the birth of her litter and take care of the puppies during their first stages of development.

While an overload of puppy cuteness is a definite perk of the job, this important role requires much time and patience.

“It’s an eight-week, 24/7 full-time commitment,” said Linda Thornton, director of breeding and puppy raising at BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. “But it can be an incredibly rewarding experience when you watch these young dogs discover a whole new world around them.”

The program is needed to ensure a regular supply of guide dogs, autism support dogs and PTSD service dogs to those in need.

As the professionally-trained adult guide and service dogs are provided at no cost to the recipient, along with client training and aftercare, volunteers are integral to the organization’s mission.

Many BC & Alberta Guide Dog puppy whelpers enjoy the experience so much they volunteer year after year for the job.

“I have had the pleasure of whelping four litters of puppies,” said volunteer Ken Lewis, who is soon to whelp litter number five. “Watching these little creatures grow from birth to seven weeks old is absolutely incredible. It is hard to relate how rewarding it is to raise and whelp a litter of puppies that will make such a difference in people’s lives.”

All food and vet costs are covered, and whelpers receive training, supplies and support from the staff at BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. The primary caregiver is required to be at home to care for the dog and be able to provide a space for a puppy pen indoors and a secure outdoor space.

If you live in Ladner, Tsawwassen or Richmond and are interested in hearing more about this unique volunteer opportunity, call Linda Thornton at 604-940-4504.
