Providence Health Care announced Monday morning that it's moving St. Paul's Hospital to False Creek Flats. The new site is located less than three kilometres away from the hospital's current Burrard Street location in the West End.
(The video below, provided by Providence Health Care, is a previous coneptualization of what a potential future redevelopment could look like at the new Station Street site. The designs and concepts are not considered final. It's meant to show how a facility could be integrated into the site's neighbourhood, according to Providence Health Care)
The new hospital and integrated health care campus will include :
- a new, full-service critical care hospital
- 24/7 primary care services
- Chronic disease management services
- Mental health and addictions beds and programs
- On-site residential care beds and programs
- Ambulatory services and outpatient clinics
- Non-acute medical services
- A low-risk birthing centre
- End-of-life care
- Research and teaching
- Community Care
- Community Outreach Programs
It's unclear what will happen to the existing St. Paul's Hospital building, which landed on Heritage Vancouver's Top 10 most endangered sites list in 2012.
But the controversial decision immediately attracted online criticism from Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert who had warned of the possibility the hospital might be moving earlier this month.
The West End's been hit with a double whammy. Oil spill closed our beaches, now Premier Clark wants to close our hospital.

St. Paul's Hospital proved it's worth during the Stanley Cup riots. Viaduct, bridges, + Skytrain all closed. No way out of downtown. 1/2

downtown Vancouver needs an emergency room, especially in an emergency. In an earthquake all exits out of downtown may be closed. 2/2

St. Paul's proximity to my home has saved my life twice. Not happy about having to go to False Creek from the West End for emergency care.
