Straight-set victory for Lo leads Team B.C. to gold

Badminton one of 130 gold medals for Team B.C. at Western Canada Summer Games

Badminton ace Vanora Lo was near-perfect on her way to a team gold medal at the Western Canada Summer Games last week.

The 16-year-old Vancouverite won her match by defeating her opponent in straight sets 21-10, 21-15.

Grappling with an injured knee, Lo said after her match earlier this month that the injury may be behind her. Today I wasnt as sore as I felt yesterday, she said.

She intends to travel to the Junior World Championships in Taiwan. I want to take in the atmosphere and check out the calibre of play because I hope to be competing there one day, said Lo.

Benny Lin of Vancouver won gold with his doubles partner.

The British Columbian team at the Western Canada Summer Games brought in 130 gold medals, 68 silvers medals and 63 bronze medals for a total of 261 podium finishes.

Wrapping up Aug. 14 in Kamloops, the annual event drew approximately 2,300 young athletes, coaches, managers and officials from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory.

B.C. won medals in all sports.
