This weeks cover girl is Myriam Laroche, the founder of Eco Fashion Week (October 15 to 19, EcoFashion-Week.com). Known for her enthusiasm for everything she does, we asked her to share her love of the West End to help celebrate West End Fest and this citys love of fashion especially the sustainable kind.
How long have you been living in the West End?
Four years.
What do you love about it?
Its one of the healthiest neighborhoods to live in downtown Vancouver. Lots of trees, low traffic, proximity to the park and the beach... And the view from my apartment is fabulous, with a sunset every night.
Describe for us your perfect day in the West End?
I start with a yoga session at the beach or a run on the seawall, then I grab breakfast at Melriches coffee house. The rest of the day has to be outside, reading on the beach, tandem ride around Stanley Park (hilarious) or just walking Davie, Denman and Robson.
And what about night time in the neighbourhood?
A magical sunset on the beach with ice cream cones. Dinner at Tavola on their patio, following the share plate concept. You let the server decide for you and surprise you.
What are some of your favourite stores and restaurants?
1.Best Vietnamese place: Pho Central the spring rolls with black mushroom and the phô soup! Raw beef, extra vegetable please! I love it because its fresh, more than affordable and the staff is warm and welcoming.
2.Best Thai place: Thai Basil Tiny but yummy. Im in love with their Pad Thai.
3.Health and beauty store: Garden Health (1204 Davie) As a health maniac, I love their personalized service and great knowledge of health.
4. Melriches coffee shop feels like home. A latte + grilled scone (homemade) with butter melting on it, sitting in the front window watching Vancouver people walking on Davie, I call it perfection. Oh and your horoscope is always available at the counter when you order your coffee. Makes me smile every time.
5. I grocery shop at West Valley Market almost every day fresh, affordable and great staff.
6. I love small places where you feel special. To eat with friends or for a great date I suggestLolitas South of the Border Cantina, a contemporary Mexican restaurantthat reminds me of New York, andTavola, my favorite Italian restaurant in town, where sharing plates is a must. A tip: ask your waiter to decide for you and enjoy the savory ride.
Eco-Fashion Week is becoming hugely popular but it must mean youre very busy. Whats on you calendar for the next few weeks (or months)?
Eco-Fashion week is 45 days to go, so its my social life that will be neglected the most. All my time is dedicated to the event and to take care of myself so I can be extremely productive.
