The men of Movember

Remember when the 30 days between October and December were just plain old November? Not anymore.

Remember when the 30 days between October and December were just plain old November? Not anymore.

Just five years after the Australian fundraising effort known as Movember made its debut in the northern hemisphere, it seems the month will forever be associated with the sanctioned growth of what is for most men and Im just being honest here is a rather unfortunate style choice.

Theres no telling if were just particularly philanthropic or whether our menfolk simply cant resist the way a handlebar complements a flannel shirt and a can of PBR, but we Canucks have now eclipsed the land of Oz as well as the United Kingdom and the United States in our fuzzy-lipped fundraising efforts for mens health research.

In fact, as of Tuesday, we topped the list of all 14 nations sporting soup strainers for Movember 2011 with 244,536 moustachioed registrants raising more than $30 million. Thats up from 119,000 participants and $22 million raised last year.

Still, not everyone sporting a stache around town is registered with the charity. Movember organizers say there are more than 31,000 registered participants in B.C. (more than 10,000 in Vancouver) but are still hoping the unofficial bandwagon-hoppers will sign up to contribute funds which, unlike the Tom Selleck-inspired styles, are accepted year round at Movember.com. Before the mos come off tonight, heres a look at the handlebarred, the horse-shoed and the otherwise hirsute around town.
