West Vancouver police impounded the vehicle of a speeding driver Sunday – the third time he’s had his auto taken way in four years.

Police were on patrol near on Highway 1 near the Cypress Bowl Road exit just before 1 p.m. when the driver of a 2017 Range Rover blew by at 138 kilometres per hour.

After they caught up with him and pulled him over, officers got a look at his driving history.

Since 2015, the West Vancouver man has had his vehicle impounded and been issued tickets three times for excessive speeding as well as receiving one ticket for driving without due care.

This time, his dangerous habit netted him a $368 fine, three demerit points and a seven-day vehicle impound.

“I don’t have any information on where he was going in a hurry but, obviously, not so much anymore,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman.

The driver’s case will automatically be reviewed by the superintendent of motor vehicles to see if a further driving prohibition might be in order, Palmer said. A history of excessive speeding would be considered in that review.

West Vancouver police have carried out 139 excessive speed impounds so far this year compared to 87 to the same date in 2017.

“It’s of immense concern that people would travel at excessive speeds.” Palmer said. “They put themselves at risk. They put everyone else around hem on the road at risk.”
