Three junior golfers finish in top 10 at boys B.C. championships

Josh Zhang tied for first after opening round, finishes sixth

Three Vancouver golfers finished in the top 10 at the junior boys championships hosted last week in Roberts Creek by B.C. Golf.

The annual tournament was held July 10 to 13 at the 72-par Sunshine Coast Golf Club. Vancouvers Josh Zhang topped the leaders board off the opening tee.

Zhang opened strong, sinking four birdies on the front nine to finish two-under and tied for first place with Kevin Kwong from Pitt Meadows.

But Zhang fell behind the leaders with a six-over-par 78 in the second round. He double-bogeyed holes four and nine, both of which he managed to par the previous round. On the third and fourth days, he birdied the par-five fourth hole.

He came back with his strongest showing in the third-round, hitting a three-under-par 69. He equalled the leader from Victoria for the best score carded that day and draw within six strokes of first place.

In the final round he carded one-over-par 73 and finished tied for sixth place.

Vancouvers Trevor Yu and Stuart Macdonald were two of the most consistent players. Both finished tied for 10th place with 291 strokes at three-over-par.

James Change tied for 40th place at 19-over-par. James Nugent finished tied for 54th, and Sean Gill tied for 61st place.

Chloe Wong was the highest-ranking Vancouver golfer at the annual B.C. junior girls championships held at the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club this weekend. She finished 41 over par after four rounds, putting her in a two-way tie for 22nd place.

On the par-72 course, Wongs best round came on the second day when she carded an eight-over-par 80 and sunk two birdies in the effort. This was a marked improved on her first round 90, which put her at 18 strokes over par.

In the third and fourth rounds, she hit an 81 and 80, respectively, for a final score of 329 at 41 over par.

She finished 52 strokes behind Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam, who took first place with an 11-under four-round game, and Taylor Kim of Surrey, who came second at seven-under-par. The closest competitors finished tied for third at eight-over-par.

Two other Vancouver golfers, Julie Lym and Gen Nugent did not finish.
