Vancouver park board is on board with the city's bid to be a host city if the World Cup comes to North America in 2026.

Council will next week decide if the city wants to sign an agreement and take the next step in possibly becoming a World Cup host city.

The agreement outlines the services the city would be willing to provide if it is included as a host city in the United Bid. Canada, the United States and Mexico have come together for a united bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In October it was announced that Vancouver had made the short list of potential host cities, along with Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal, three cities in Mexico and 25 in the U.S.

If the bid is successful and Vancouver is chosen as a host the city would see three to five games during the tournament.

“We are working hard and I’m very hopeful that Vancouver will be an official host city for the FIFA 2026 World Cup,” Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a press release. “Vancouver is an obvious choice to stage some of the matches, given our enormous success hosting major international sporting events like the 2015 Women’s World Cup, the 2010 Olympic Games and the annual Rugby World Sevens Series.”

The host city agreement up for consideration Tuesday outlines obligations such as sanitation and traffic management.

The United Bid Committee, which is coordinating the North American bid, will submit the proposal to FIFA in March. And on June 13 the association will award the event to either North America or Morocco, the only other country bidding to host the tournament.

If North America’s bid is successful the final list of host cities will be confirmed in 2020.
