A pedestrian died Thursday night after getting hit by a truck while crossing the street.

The 55-year-old Vancouver man was heading north in a marked crosswalk on Inverness Street at East King Edward Avenue when he was struck by an eastbound pick-up truck just before 6 p.m.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries but later died.

Police said the driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

“VPD investigators believe that the rain and low light conditions were contributing factors to this collision,” Sgt. Jason Robillard said in a press release. “Speed and alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the crash.”

This is Vancouver’s first traffic fatality of 2018.
