Martin and Esther Kafer reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro Oct. 1, making their final evening ascent under a full moon.
At 85 and 84 years of age, respectively, the Vancouver husband and wife climbing pioneers are the oldest couple to make a recorded ascent of the 19,354-foot mountain, the tallest peak in Africa, located near Tanzania's northern border.
Hiking for the Ascent for Alzheimer's fundraiser in support of the Alzheimer Society of B.C., the Kafers raised more than $24,000.
Their hiking record is pending verification by Guinness World Records.
In May this year before leaving for Tanzania, Martin explained their goal could be achieved but only at the speed of "pole pole," which translates from Swahili to mean very slowly.
The Kafers are expected back in Vancouver next week.
