A Penticton man is facing charges and two Vancouver police officers are recovering after a violent confrontation early Monday morning.

The two patrol officers were parked on Granville Street near Helmcken at around 2 a.m. on Jan. 15 when they were physically confronted by a 44-year-old man in an “agitated state.”

The officers were eventually able to bring the man under control but not before sustaining several injuries. One officer sprained several fingers while the other sustained a compound leg fracture requiring emergency surgery. That officer is still recovering in hospital.

“Our frontline patrol officers deal with challenging situations on a daily basis,” department spokesman Sgt. Jason Robillard said in a press release. “They are required to continually get in harm’s way to protect the citizen’s they serve. We wish our injured officers a speedy recovery.”

The Penticton man is facing several charges including aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a police officer and uttering threats.
