An East Vancouver business is facing close to $24,000 in fines after a police investigation found that it was completing improper vehicle inspections.

An audit conducted late last month by Vancouver police and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) investigators found that the Budget Brake and Muffle at 245 East Second Ave. was completing vehicle inspections with no authorized inspector on site.

Vancouver police traffic unit investigators determined that 40 vehicles had been inspected since the authorized inspector stopped working at the facility.

The owner has been charged with 40 counts of “unauthorized person signing inspection report” under the Motor Vehicle Act. Each count carries a fine of $580, totaling $23,920. He has also surrendered his inspection facility designation and hid ‘Facility Operator’ certificate to CVSE.

Vancouver police said of the 40 vehicles affected, 40 were commercial vehicles — 16 limousines and one tow truck — while the rest were private vehicles. In the interest of public safety, the department is contacting all the vehicle owners to advise them that their inspections are invalid and they will need to have them inspected at a valid facility.
