Teachers in Vancouver remain on the picket line this morning at schools across the city as word spreads of a tentative settlement with the provincial government to end the ongoing strike.

The BCTF released a terse statement on its website early this morning, reading: “The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association have reached a tentative agreement. If ratified by members, it would bring an end to the strike/lockout. Details will be available soon.”

No details have been released at the time of this posting, including when or how soon a ratification vote by the province’s estimated 44,000 public school teachers could be held. No details were also available from the provincial government.

The start of the school year has been delayed by 11 days in an unprecedented stoppage in public education in B.C. The previous school year ended early in June when teachers walked off the job and remained so during the summer, resulting in the cancellation of summer school classes. Pay increases, benefits and an extended dispute about class size and composition were key issues keeping teachers and the government apart during negotiations.
