The Courier continued to expand its online video presence in 2017. Some videos were short and quirky, while others profiled in more detail the people and places that make this city come alive. And one video — about a mysterious blob that was discovered in Stanley Park’s Lost Lagoon — caught the eye of National Geographic and became a bonafide viral hit.

Here are some of the Courier’s video highlights from the past year.

What about blob?

Editor in chief Martha Perkins donned hip waders and got her hands on a mysterious blob found in Lost Lagoon. Our footage of the strange, gelatinous creature caught the attention of news outlets around the world, making it our most watched video ever — 60,000 views on Facebook and 944,000 views (and counting) on YouTube.

Time keeper

Fritz Irrgang has been a master watchmaker since 1963. Despite shifting demographics and advances in technology, time keeps on ticking at his Western Watch & Clock Repair shop on Burrard Street.

Bowled over

The Courier visited Grandview Lanes, which celebrated its 70th anniversary, and got the lowdown on everything from how to throw a strike to how many pairs of shoes they go through in a year.
