The Westside U-14 boys basketball team went undefeated at the B.C. zone championship May 25 to 27 at the Langley Events Centre to win the provincial title.
In the championship final, the Westside boys beat Richmond 63-51. Outmatched in the first quarter, Westside trailed by 12 points before climbing back to a six-point lead to end the half 31-25. They didnt relinquish the lead, and built a 16-point advantage at one point.
Coach Randy Coutts, also the high school basketball coach at Kitsilano secondary, said solid foul shooting was the key to their success.
On the way to a 5-0 tournament showing, the Westside beat the provinces North East zone team 82-43, the Vancouver Eastside 65-50 and Burnaby/New West 53-47.
The Vancouver Westside regional team includes Adrian Bacic, Alec Bayne, Vincent Cao, Kiran Bowers, Marko Pruzlj, John Ferreira, Crawford Dobson-Mack, Pierce Strutt, Howard Wang and Harry Liu. The team was coached by Coutts and Rob Bayne.
Many of these players will represent the region at the B.C. Summer Games July 26 29 in Surrey.
