The zone wrestling championships for Vancouver, the North Shore and the Sunshine Coast region run from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gladstone secondary.
Athletes weigh in Thursday afternoon and five winners in each weight class (16 for boys, 13 for girls) will advance to the Provincial Championships Feb. 28 to March 2 in Cowichan Valley.
Vancouver athletes to watch include Paul Opeda from Vancouver College, Marc Magano from Britannia and Kim Elek from John Oliver.
On the girls side, Jilliane Vina from Britannia (known provincially as an incredible basketball talent) is favoured to win gold in her class.
John Oliver wrestling coach Chris Fuoco said of the Grade 12 stand-out, she is ferocious.
