It’s hardly a slow week in fashion with the premiere of GIRLS who has won Anna Wintour over. Also, the Golden Globe Awards took place on Sunday where red carpet looks took center stage. Just released today is also the star of GIRLS Lena Dunham’s Vogue cover causing quite a buzz since Dunham is hardly the prototypical Vogue cover girl readers are use to (we digress).
The Golden Globes this year was packed full of celebrities while comedic hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey serenaded us with laughs throughout the night. Also, no one apparently prepared a speech or expected to win. Of course, there are always red carpet wins but celebrities this year were considerably conservative when it came to giving us something more than conventional to look at.

With every season of award shows we learn some new things we can take away with us. Let’s get to it find out who are the top 6 fashion winners of the night and lessons we learned.
Amy Adams makes a low plunge gown look classy. You can’t really beat Valentino when it comes to romantic elegance. It’s difficult to pull off a low cut dress at the risk of seeming trashy. The proportions of this dress and color blocking works with her body putting her on our top 8 best dressed for the night.
Lesson: Color blocking is still on trend and a low plunge dress can work if you play with the right proportions.
Diane Keaton suit was tailored to perfection. Borrowed themes from men’s fashion have been infused in trends for women. Consider the boyfriend dress shirt that made a huge presence last year and the boyfriend blazer that continues to be a staple. The androgynous look of a power suit on a woman is so polished but it’s really all in the fit and tailoring.
Lesson: Cross gender trends are on the rise.
Lupita Nyong’o red caped wonder Ralph Lauren dress was surely a head turner. 2013 saw a heavy emphasis on the return of capes. I suppose it’s not rocket science to combine themes but it was definitely executed flawlessly to create a memorable look. While most people were excited to see more prints, Lauren incorporated red for boldness.
Lesson: Opt for a bold color if you’re not a fan of prints.

Caitlin Fitzgerald from Masters of Sex was a winner in an Emila Wickstead blue dress. Cap sleeves are a sure hit and bring us back to the early 90s’ no?
Lesson: Cap sleeves are on trend this year.
Taylor swift packed a subtle punch with a color blocked Carolina Herrera gown. A strapless dress can seem overdone when it comes to formal looks but designer Carolina Herrera was genius in creating texture on the bottom half of the dress and incorporating color blocking. This is the second look that incorporated color blocking on the red carpet. Did we mention that color blocking is on trend this season? We certainly noted.
Lesson: Color blocking and texture can vamp up a normally conventional and predictable dress.
Kelly Osborne was a surprise showstopper in a black and gold Escada dress. Remember when Kelly Osborne sported a punky and eccentric look that nobody got? Since acquiring a spot on E! Fashion Police she’s made a transformation we can all get on board with including this dress with cap sleeves.
Lesson: Black is a great color if you prefer to keep it safe. A second appearance of cap sleeves make it a shoe in for our trend list this year.
