Jumping on bed
When considering new sheet sets, don't just rely on the thread count. You also need to account for durability.

Want to kill a few hours online? Try shopping for a new set of sheets.

A lot of information around bedding focuses on the thread count, which refers to how the fabric is woven. Despite that, thread count is not as critical as marketing would suggest—between 200- to 600-count is more than adequate, and anything more than that means you are royalty.

The most confusing aspect of shopping typically comes down to fabric choices: cotton, bamboo, microfibre, TENCEL, satin, polyester and linen.

Let's break down the most widely-available fabric: cotton, which includes Egyptian cotton (with a reputation for high thread counts, softness and luxury), flannel (cozy and warm), jersey (soft like your favourite T-shirt, but prone to pilling), pima (very popular and designed to mimic the quality of Egyptian cotton without the price tag), Supima (a portmanteau of superior pima) and upland (marked as "100% cotton" on labels).

And that's just cotton. There are other fabric options to consider:

  • Bamboo has grown in popularity because, while the tread count is lower, many find them softer than cotton sheets with an eco-conscious factor.
  • Microfibre is a blend as soft as cotton, but the fabric is human-made (like a poly-blend). This is not necessarily bad, as these sets get high marks for durability.
  • TENCEL is a trademarked name for a fabric made from eucalyptus trees (the sheets will have a slight sheen to the finish), and an affordable and durable option when keeping the bed cool is a priority.
  • Satin and silk sheets sound slightly impractical but score high points for their smoothness and comfort. Satin is not a fabric but a process (silk sheets can be satin, but satin sheets are not always silk). Check the label if you specifically want silk (there are many synthetic satins out there) and take note of the care instructions (can sets be machine washed?).
  • Polyester sheets are typically the most inexpensive option and come with different pros and cons: easier to stain but also faster to dry. And beware of the care instructions because they can be washed on a regular setting, but many users note that this fabric pills quickly in the dryer.
