Kafka's Coffee and Tea has had a dedicated arts program curated by Michael Schwartz for 8 years. They have been an important part of the thriving Mount Pleasant art scene, providing a much-needed venue for rising talent to showcase their work. Michael has curated an exhibit in partnership with THRIVE Arts Studio and selected work from their growing membership. The show is called “Friend or Foe,” a wide-reaching theme that each artist has interpreted in a unique way, commenting on personal relationships, environmental responsibility, and political discord. “Friend or Foe reflects the primal tension between self and other,” Michael explains, “and the instinct to suss out if someone means us harm. We’ve seen in recent years how this instinct can be manipulated to nefarious aims. Art can play an important role in reminding us to consider carefully how we receive and accept such information, and how we make such judgments.”
