BC Craft Beer Month Has Arrived: October 2013

Zip that jacket all the way up, wrap that scarf round your neck, and always keep an umbrella handy: October is here.

Zip that jacket all the way up, wrap that scarf round your neck, and always keep an umbrella handy: October is here.  Vancouver’s notorious grey skies have settled into the landscape bringing with them a near constant drizzle and the type of cold that seeps through your skin and curls round your bones.  Whether the seasonal transition is something you rejoice or lament, the month brings with it things we can all agree are awesome: The way the leaves turn magnificently scarlet before they drift to the ground, the opportunity to tuck into hearty meals in cozy places and, craft beer.

You may not know it, but October is BC Craft Beer Month.  BC’s craft brewing industry is undergoing revitalization and Vancouver is at the forefront, having added five craft breweries to the roster just this past year.  In a city known for its culinary prowess, creative talent, and growing patronage to local fare, the surge of craft brewing is a natural step, and we can only expect the industry to grow.

With the goal of showcasing and supporting local brewing talent, BC Craft Beer month is an annual event that began October, 2011.  For 31 days, the province will be abuzz with cask launches, themed dinners, and of course, an abundance of beer to sample. There are countless events held in and around the city: Check out BC Craft Beer Month’s website or get up to date news via their Facebook page.

The British Columbia Beer Awards held October 19th at the Croatian Cultural Centre is the signature event of BC Craft Beer Month and will include not only the awards ceremony itself, but also the BC Beer Awards Beer Festival. BC’s best breweries will be on hand, showcasing their talents and doing what they do best - making great beer!  Tickets are $35 and expected to sell out fast.

Throughout the month, Vancouver is Awesome will be featuring local brewmasters and their craft, giving readers a chance to learn about the industry and let them know where to source the best pints the city has to offer – Stay tuned!
