Burnaby reveals legendary lineup for free Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival

This year's Burnaby Blues and Roots will feature a range of stunning voices in B.C.'s most beautiful outdoor venue.
Iconic R&B and gospel singer Mavis Staples will perform at the Burnaby Blues and Roots festival Aug. 10.

Mavis Staples, renowned civil rights icon and Grammy Award-winner, will headline this year's free Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival at Deer Lake Park Aug. 10.

Staples rose to fame as a member of The Staples Singers, a family gospel group led by her father "Pops" Staples.

After forming in the 1950s, the group became highly involved in the American civil rights movement in the '60s.

The Staples Singers received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

As a solo artist, Staples is known for hits like "I'll Take You There" and has won three Grammys.

"We're thrilled to be welcoming another legendary performer, Mavis Staples, to the Burnaby Blues and Roots stage for 2024, along with so many other talented musicians," said Mayor Mike Hurley in a press release.

"And we're proud to once again be offering free admission, providing everyone with the opportunity to see an incredible festival in one of the most beautiful concert venues in B.C."

Artists also performing on the Blues and Root stage this August will include indie rock band Calexico, Texan soul-rock-Caribbean rhythm band The Suffers, Canadian singer-songwriter and Juno Award-winner Crystal Shawanda and Vancouver-based singer-songwriter fusing soul and jazz the della kit.

The festival will include food trucks, a beer garden, community booths and more.
