A comedy tour that's been selling out venues around Metro Vancouver will land in Port Moody.
But the performers' names won’t be revealed until later this month.
Aaron Arya, comedian and founder of Jokers Canada, told the Tri-City News Thursday, Aug. 31 that his company "strives to be the Cirque of live comedy" by showcasing top talent through a strong brand.
Jokers Canada launched during the pandemic in 2021 when comedy clubs — along with the hospitality industry — were hit hard with the public health emergency restrictions.
In response, Arya sought more intimate places for comedians to perform that could allow for physical distancing.
Jokers Canada's first show, held at The Roxy Cabaret in Vancouver, sold out.
Now, with the COVID-19 protocols over, Jokers Canada has got 24 sold-out gigs to its credit and plans to branch out to the suburbs to perform in bigger spaces, like the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody.
"There's a demand," said Arya, a Vancouver resident who grew up in Toronto.
"Comedy doesn't need to happen in a club."
Arya said his goal is to see Jokers Canada tour outside of the province.
Still, he said he loves B.C. audiences. "Most suburbs don't have a comedy club, so we want to bring professional comedy to places that don’t always have access to live stand-up."
As for the Port Moody show, it will feature five or six comedians whose credits include Just For Laughs, Comedy Central, Netflix and CBC; some have even done stand-up outside of North America.
Not knowing who will be on stage ahead of time "is part of the charm," Arya said.
"It brings excitement for the audience and lots of surprises."
