The City of New Westminster is lighting up the darkest nights of the year through a campaign of photogenic public art displays.

The Downtown New West Business Improvement Association has created an all encompassing road map to making the most out of this year’s Shine Bright New West holiday campaign. Making their first appearance in New West this year alongside the twinkling Columbia Street trees and the music making Floralume art installation will be the Candycombs in Hyack Square and the Shine Selfie Stops.

What in the sugar plum fairy is a Candycomb?

According to a release from the New West BIA, the Candycombs were created for Downtown New Westminster by Scott Amos and David Parfit, the same minds behind the Floralume art piece.

“We were intrigued by the opportunity in Downtown New West to create something that could be fun, light and safe,” Scott Amos said. “Candycombs are bright and colourful; they feel almost tropical. I think they will bring some playfulness to the community, something we all need this year.”

A colouring contest for... adults?

The City of New Westminster's website lists the various activities residents can partake in, including a light display map, the locations of several selfie stations, as well as a number of holiday games including scavenger hunts and colouring contests for both adults and children.

For those who wish to keep indoors, the site also provides a free take-home celebration kit which includes holiday-themed activities, family oriented crafts, and child-focused giveaways. The celebration kit has everything a family needs to enjoy the holiday season.

“Shine Bright is exactly what New West needs right now. I personally can’t wait to grab hot chocolates with my family, wander through our Downtown on our nightly walk and experience a little more sparkle, we could all use more of that in our day to day,” said Kendra Johnston, executive director of the downtown New Westminster BIA.

The campaign will run until January 3, 2021.
