Metro Vancouverites are invited to watch the tree come to life with twinkling lights, when the Mayor and special guests, including Santa, gather at the annual Tree Lighting Festival to flip the light switch at City Hall Plaza Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The tree, which is one of the biggest to be lit in Metro Vancouver, will shine until the New Year.

Now in its ninth year, the Festival started out as a small ceremony in 2010 at Holland Park in Surrey and has since grown to be one of the City’s signature events, bringing the community together to kick off the holiday season.

While many visit to be in awe of the huge glowing tree, there’s plenty more to see and do at the festival, which promises to be bigger and brighter than ever this year with a light tunnel, enchanted forest and interactive light displays to explore.

Plus, located in a large tent on the Surrey Civic Plaza, visitors will find the Holiday Market and Village full of fun and engaging exhibitors, light installations and live music. The market features a number of local vendors offering one-of-kind gifts to browse and delicious Christmas treats to try.

There’s fun for the whole family to be had, visitors can meet Micky and Minnie mouse, watch an ice carver hand-carve a magical Christmas tree or go on a ride on the Tree Lighting Express for a journey around the festival site.

The festival also has an array of activities to keep the kids entertained, including a holiday fun zone, free photos with Santa and amusement rides.

More than 70 volunteers work together on the night to make the event a reality. The Mayor will personally wish the community a happy holiday when he flips the switch to light the tree alongside everyone.
