Two things are guaranteed when you visit Capilano River Park i North Vancouver. The first is that you'll see moss. Lots of moss. Lining the trees and the stumps and the rocks and anything along the sides of the numerous, miles-long trails – the shrouding of the rainforest that surrounds the river in this protected public park makes for ideal growing conditions – making sure your visit will be filled with visuals containing the greenest of greens, and the freshest of oxygen.
The third (and arguably most awesome) thing that's certain is that you'll see fish – MANY fish – and you'll learn things about these fish that you probably didn't know before you arrived. FOR FREE. Adjacent to the parking lot where you arrive is a working fish hatchery with a number of rearing ponds, displays and educational boards which walk you through exactly what's happening with this most iconic of BC fish: the salmon. A few species of the fish are bred here and when they mature they are released, make their way down to the ocean and then years later they return up the river as adults. They go up a fish ladder which you can view through glass as these salmonids reach their very birthplace to lay/fertilize their eggs, filter the last few hits of oxygen through the water in their gills, pass away at their final destination... and then be eaten by birds and such. It is a wonder to see, only 20 minutes from the heart of our city. |
