Unusual Vancouver race to mix running with sandwiches

It's a half marathon and lunch on the run.

A race involving sandwiches is set to take place in Vancouver soon.

Vancouver runners will have a new challenge this September.

The Hoagie Half will mix a relay race with competitive eating as teams run between some of Vancouver's most notable sandwich shops.

Along the way, they'll cover 21 km (a half-marathon split among the relay team) and down four sandwiches from Meat & Bread, Say Hey Café, Juke Fried Chicken and Vennie’s Sub Shop.

“Think of it as the ultimate run-club-meets-food-festival,” says co-organizer Oll Farrell in a press release. “It’s sweaty, it’s chaotic, it’s delicious — and we want it to feel like a street party.”

Container Brewery will operate as the hub for the race, where the finish line and post-race celebration will take place.

The race will happen between 2 and 5 p.m. (with staggered start times for the teams), followed by an after party from 5 to 10 p.m.

Organizers are expecting 150 runners (there's a limited number of team tickets), and spectators along the way.
