Vancouver-based artists Hanna Benihoud and Charlotte Spafford have created a suspended art installation exploring the power of the female voice.
“We were both personally affected and inspired by the #metoo movement, and the Women’s March in 2017,” Benihoud says. “We wanted to create something that would visually represent the power of the female collective."
The artists have used pages from books written by female authors to explore how the power of women has and continues to shape our world.
Through social media, the artists asked the question: 'which book by a female author has most impacted your life?'
The books mentioned that were the most popular have been included as source material for their installation including: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood.
Flock is described as a "living installation" that will evolve as the artists make changes on a near daily basis creating a real time stop-motion animation that reflects the power and dynamism of female voices.
Flock will be displayed from May 25th to June 10th at The Aviary (637 E 15th St).
